LAY EVANGELIZERS – A VIBRANT MISSIONARY MOVEMENT IN THE DIOCESE OF SIVAGANGAI

“He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to the whole creation’ (Mk 16:15).”

The Lay Evangelizers Movement of the Diocese of Sivagangai is a dynamic, Spirit-led initiative that embodies the missionary call of the Church, especially as envisioned by the Second Vatican Council. Rooted in the Gospel and inspired by the zeal of early missionaries, this movement empowers lay faithful to become active agents of evangelization, witnessing Christ in their families, parishes, and society.

The movement traces its origins to the late 1970s in the rural mission areas of Ramnad region, where a small group of committed lay persons, touched by the power of the Word of God, began gathering for prayer, Scripture reflection, and family outreach. With the guidance of the Church and the support of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, this humble beginning gradually evolved into a structured diocesan movement known today as the Lay Evangelizers (Narcheithi Paniyalarkal).

At present, the Diocese of Sivagangai is blessed with 1,047 trained Lay Evangelizers, actively involved in the mission of the Church. The movement has also extended its reach beyond the diocese by facilitating the formation and training of lay evangelizers in other dioceses, thus contributing to the wider mission of the Church.

The movement functions under the guidance of the Commission for Evangelization of the Diocese of Sivagangai. The Commission is animated by a Religious Brother belonging to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, who serves as its Secretary. The Secretariat operates from Arulchandru Nilayam (Lay Empowerment and Faith Resource Development Centre), Ulaganathapuram, Paramakudi – 623707, Ramanathapuram District, which serves as the nerve centre for formation, coordination, and resource development.

The motto of the movement, “To become and to make disciples of Christ,” captures its core identity. Lay Evangelizers are formed through a systematic and intensive formation program, typically spanning over 15 months, which focuses on the Word of God, prayer life, sacramental participation, Church teaching, and missionary discipleship. This formation enables them to grow spiritually and equips them with the skills necessary for evangelization and pastoral service.

The mission of the Lay Evangelizers is both spiritual and pastoral. They engage actively in:
•⁠  ⁠Proclaiming and sharing the Word of God 
•⁠  ⁠Family visits and pastoral accompaniment 
•⁠  ⁠Organizing retreats, prayer meetings, and faith renewal programs 
•⁠  ⁠Strengthening Basic Christian Communities (Anbiyams) 
•⁠  ⁠Catechetical support and sacramental preparation 
•⁠  ⁠Reaching out to fallen-away Catholics 
•⁠  ⁠Promoting social awareness and addressing issues such as superstition, caste discrimination, and social injustice 

Their approach to mission is deeply personal and relational, marked by presence, accompaniment, and witness. Many lay evangelizers dedicate their time voluntarily, often staying in villages during mission periods, especially in Lent and Advent, bringing spiritual renewal and hope to the people.

A distinctive feature of the movement is its lay-led and self-sustaining character. It functions through coordinators and animators rather than hierarchical leadership, fostering a spirit of equality, communion, and shared responsibility. The members contribute their own resources, reflecting a deep commitment and sense of ownership of the Church’s mission.

The spirituality of the Lay Evangelizers is centred on the Word of God, nourished by the Eucharist, and expressed through a life of prayer, simplicity, sacrifice, and service. Their witness of faith often inspires entire families and communities to grow in Christian life.

Over the years, the movement has made a significant impact in revitalizing parish life, strengthening Catholic identity, and promoting active lay participation. It stands today as a powerful model of New Evangelization and lay empowerment, not only for the Diocese of Sivagangai but also for the wider Church.

As a vibrant community of missionary disciples, the Lay Evangelizers continue to respond generously to the call of Christ—reaching out to the peripheries, renewing faith communities, and proclaiming the Gospel with conviction and joy.
