ST. JOHN DE BRITTO SHRINE BASILICA

ORIYUR

Rev. Fr. Albert Muthumalai SJ

Rector and Superior

St. John De Britto Shrine Basilica, Oriyur is one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage centers in Tamil Nadu. It is located in Oriyur, Ramanathapuram District, and is dedicated to John de Britto, a Portuguese Jesuit missionary who worked among the people of the Marava region.

St. John de Britto preached the Gospel in Tamil Nadu during the 17th century and adopted the local culture in order to bring people closer to Christ. Because of his missionary work and conversions, he faced persecution and was martyred at Oriyur on 4 February 1693.

The place of his martyrdom later became a pilgrimage center. The church built there was eventually elevated to the status of a Basilica, recognizing its spiritual and historical importance. Every year, thousands of pilgrims from different parts of India visit Oriyur to pray and seek the intercession of St. John de Britto, especially during the annual feast in February, which commemorates his martyrdom.

Today, the shrine stands as a powerful symbol of faith, missionary zeal, and martyrdom in the Church of Tamil Nadu.
