SACRED HEART SHRINE

IDAIKATTUR

Rev. Dr. John Vasantha Kumar

Rector & Parish Priest

Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Idaikattur is a famous Catholic pilgrimage church located in Idaikattur in Sivagangai District, Tamil Nadu. It is well known for its unique Gothic-style architecture, inspired by European churches.

The church was built in 1894 by the Jesuit missionary Celestine Joseph Beschi (commonly known as Fr. Célestin). The structure is remarkable because it was constructed mainly with bricks, lime, and mortar without the use of iron or wood, which makes it architecturally distinctive. Inside the church, there are beautiful statues and paintings imported from France.

This shrine is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and it has become an important pilgrimage center attracting many devotees from different parts of Tamil Nadu and India. The annual feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated with great devotion, drawing large numbers of pilgrims.

Today, Sacred Heart Church at Idaikattur stands as a symbol of deep faith, missionary dedication, and artistic heritage in the Diocese of Sivagangai.
