The Diocese of Sivagangai was erected on 25 July 1987, following its bifurcation from the Archdiocese of Madurai. St. John de Britto (†1693), its patron saint, came to this region as a Jesuit missionary from Europe and laid the firm foundation of faith among thousands of people.
Pope Francis appointed Rev. Fr. Lourdu Anandam as the Bishop of Sivagangai on 21 September 2023. He was born on 15 August 1958 in Thiruvarangam, Tamil Nadu. After completing his philosophical studies at Arul Anandar College, Madurai, and theological formation at St. Paul's Seminary, Tiruchirappalli, he pursued higher studies in Germany. He obtained a Doctorate in Systematic Theology from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. He was ordained a priest on 6 April 1986 for the Archdiocese of Madurai, and has since rendered distinguished service in various pastoral, academic, and administrative roles.
