History
Christianity was likely introduced to the Pamban island, spanning 45 square miles, by St. Francis Xavier. Initially, the Christian community was cared for by priests from Periapattanam and later by Jesuit missionaries in Ramnad. While churches already existed in Verkottu and Pamban, Thangachimadam, strategically located in the island's center, became a new parish in 1909, splitting from the Ramnad parish. Fr. Segretain served as its first parish priest and renovated the ancient chapel at Verkottu, now dedicated to St. James. Fr. Boddelle, who served for over 30 years as parish priest, erected the parish church dedicated to the Little Flower in 1930. Subsequently, this parish was divided into three separate parishes: Mandapam in 1986, Rameswaram in 1987, and Pamban in 1989.
