History
In 1750, Sasivarna Thevar established a new capital at Sivagangai. During this period, Fr. Bertoldi visited Sivagangai and received royal honors, leading to the king granting permission for missionaries to preach and construct churches in his realm. Initially part of the Susaiapparpattanam parish, then later the Idaikattur parish, Sivagangai became an independent parish in 1910. The Church of the Assumption in Sivagangai was initially constructed by Fr. Bedin and subsequently underwent modifications by others. A school was established in 1918, which continues to thrive with a strong student body.
The foundation stone for the new cathedral was laid by the Archbishop of Madurai on October 26th, 1986. On April 10th, 1988, the new Alangara Annai Cathedral was inaugurated by Most Rev. Edward Francis and consecrated by Archbishop P.J. Diraviam, with the presence of bishops from Tamil Nadu. The diocese of Sivagangai expresses gratitude to Mr. Xavier Nieberding from Belgium, who generously covered the entire cost of constructing this magnificent cathedral.
