History
SARUGANI - This parish has a rich history, with Jesuit missionaries establishing a presence here as early as 1701. By 1751, there was already a chapel in place, and in 1800, the Zamin was granted to the parish. Fr. James de Rossi (1736-1774) notably served here and is still revered as "Chinna Savariar." The village, known as Marani Sarugani, underwent significant changes under the abolition of the Zamin Act, leading to the government taking control of much of the village's land.
Despite these challenges, the parish has flourished, giving rise to daughter parishes such as Keela Uchani, Sagaya Nagar, and Muppaiyur. Currently, it maintains 13 sub-stations of its own. The church underwent renovations in 1995 to maintain its heritage and functionality. Three major feasts are observed here: the titular feast of the Sacred Hearts celebrated over 8 days, the feast of St. Francis Xavier honoring "Chinna Saveriar" celebrated for three days, and the Fr. Leveil memorial feast held for one day in March.
