History

Salaigramam was erected as a new parish in 1909, splitting from Suranam parish, with Fr. Gamon serving as its inaugural parish priest. Over time, it has also given rise to Ilayangudi parish. The local church's construction began in 1868 and was finalized in 1874, modeled after the one in Suranam but with distinct similarities. The old Sacred Heart Mandapam has been replaced by a small, beautiful niche, creating an open space in front of the church. In 1978, Fr. Maria Pancras constructed a new priest's residence to the south of the old one. With significant assistance from abroad, he also established new chapels in 18 substations to strengthen the wavering faith of the local Catholics. It was in close proximity to Kottaiyur, one of the parish's sub-stations, that Thadiya Thever was baptized, an act that ultimately led to the martyrdom of St. John de Britto.
