History
"In the heart of Hinduism's capital, St. Francis Xavier unfurled the Cross, converting the Kadayar fishers at Verkottu," recounts historian Fr. Schurhammer. St. James' Church at Verkottu stands as one of the oldest churches dedicated to this great apostle, noted as such as early as 1644. Even today, it draws thousands of pilgrims from across Ramnad District every year on 25th July.
For years, the New Madurai Mission tended to the needs of Catholics on Pamban Island. A new structure emerged at Verkottu during 1976-77, now thriving as a High School. Rameswaram parish, established in 1987 by splitting from Thangachimadam parish with Fr. D. David as its inaugural parish priest, operates with a cohesive team of priests who collaborate on all Christian activities across the island.
