History
Rajakembiram is a village steeped in history, its church of Our Lady of Assumption standing for over two centuries as a testament to its enduring presence. From 1840 to 1865, it served as the administrative hub for the Marava region under the auspices of the new Madurai Mission before becoming affiliated with Idaikattur. The parish was officially reinstated in 1890, under the leadership of Fr. Karcheeya. In 1930, Fr. Appavoo erected the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, a cherished annual celebration in honor of the village's Patroness.
Over time, Rajakembiram gave rise to Savariarpattanam and Manamadurai parishes, evolving with the construction of a modern church in place of the venerable old one, sanctified by the Archbishop of Madurai in October 1980. With the establishment of the Sivagangai diocese, Kalugerkadai and Thiruppuvanam, formerly sub-stations of St. Mary's Madurai, became affiliated with Rajakembiram.
Another significant development in the parish was the inauguration of a new building on 5th June 1989, a project blessed by the Bishop and unveiled by Fr. Rolf Linse on 22nd July 1996 at a new location distinct from the church's original grounds.
