History
Fr. Perrin acquired a parcel of land in Nermmeni village near Puliyal in September 1854 and commenced his pastoral work. Subsequently, in 1859, Puliyal parish was officially established at its current location, with Fr. Jules Eyraud serving as its inaugural parish priest. Puliyal holds historical significance as the epicenter of the so-called schism involving Goanese priests in Marava. It was in this vicinity that St. John de Britto was apprehended, alongside other early missionaries who were imprisoned.
The current parish church was constructed by Fr. Ignatius in 1922 and received the blessing of Archbishop Leonard in 1936. Subsequent renovations were undertaken by Fr. M.S. Sallette in 1964 and Fr. Francis Xavier in 1989. Over time, some of Puliyal's former sub-stations were separated to establish independent parishes such as Orikottai, C.K. Mangalam, Nanakudi, and Devakottai.
