History
Since the execution of St. John de Britto on 4th February 1693, Oriyur has evolved into a significant pilgrimage center. Initially, it was under the jurisdiction of the Mylapore diocese, operating under Portuguese patronage. Subsequently, it was affiliated with Padregudi Parish until the establishment of the Madurai diocese in 1938, at which point Oriyur became part of it as a sub-station of Andavoorani Parish. In 1943, it attained independent parish status.
Presently, Oriyur hosts three churches within the Britto Shrine premises, marking three annual feasts: the Martyrdom of St. John de Britto on 4th February, his Canonization Day on 22nd June, and the feast of Our Lady of Good Health on 8th September. Recent developments include an annual pilgrimage led by the local ordinary in October, drawing participants from both the Madurai Archdiocese and the Sivagangai diocese to honor their patron saint.
