History

The roots of Mutupettai parish trace back to Periapattanam, where a few Catholic families, descendants of those baptized by St. Francis Xavier in 1543, settled in 1709. As per a copper plate inscription, the current church was constructed in 1780. The administration of the parish transitioned from Goanese priests to the Jesuits of the new Madurai Mission in 1929. The first school in Mutupettai was built by Fr. E. Mas, and it has been steadily developed by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Additionally, the Bon Secours sisters operate a Primary School for girls in the area. The parish also possesses a coconut grove spanning approximately 30 acres, a portion of which was donated to the church by the Sethupathy of Ramnad between 1782-95.
