History
The Catholic community of Vembathur - Michaelpattanam is said to have originated from Periyakottai, along with several other communities in the vicinity. Over time, it has grown significantly, with Periyakottai now being considered one of its sub-stations. Their faith was fostered by Fr. De Rossi (1735-74). Until 1916, parish priest Fr. Dharmanathar oversaw the construction of a church dedicated to St. Michael and a presbytery. During Fr. Kurien's tenure (1945-57), efforts were made to encourage priestly and religious vocations. Fr. Pancras (1968-75) played a role in constructing roads that connected Michaelpattanam to nearby villages. A new and impressive church has been constructed on the site of the old one and was consecrated by Bishop Edward on 29th September 1995.
