History

Mandapam Camp was bifurcated from Thangachimadam including Mandapam and Vedalai as substations. Mandapam Camp parish was established as a parish in May 1986 under the leadership of Most Reverend Dr. Casimir Gnanadickam, who was the Archbishop of Madurai at that time for the welfare of the Catholics coming as the refuges from Sri Lanka. Before its establishment, Mandapam Camp served as a sub-station of Thangachimadam parish. The current church in Mandapam Camp, constructed in 1956, is well-known for its devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Following the separation of Mandapam Parish in 1996, the parish's jurisdiction now covers the boundaries of the camp area exclusively, so that it could cater the needs of the Tamil refugees in the camp.
