History
Kokkoorani was established as a new parish in 1970, although there were Christians in the area dating back to the time of St. John de Britto (1693). The majority of the residents here face social and economic challenges. The current parish church, dedicated to St. Sebastian, was constructed nearly 200 years ago by a Portuguese Catholic commander serving in the British defense forces of Sethupathi of Ramnad. He built the church as an expression of gratitude to St. Sebastian for curing his chronic stomach ache. Even today, both Hindus and Christians hold a special devotion to St. Sebastian.
The parish is well-known for two major celebrations: the feast of St. Sebastian, observed on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, and the Passion Play held on Easter Sunday and Monday.
