History

Senjai - Karaikudi Parish was erected as a part of Kuthalur parish on 7th August 1943. In 1913, there were only 11 Catholics in Karaikudi, but within thirty years, this number grew to 1642. During Fr. P.C. Chacko's tenure, significant developments took place, including the construction of the parish church, parish house, and Little Flower R.C. Middle School. Additionally, Fr. Sebastian oversaw the construction of a church at Sekkalai.

Following Sekkalai's establishment as a new parish, Senjai parish now has only six sub-stations. In 1995-96, the parish church underwent renovations, and during this time, the cemetery boundaries were marked and fenced. Near Devakottai Road, a new Shrine was built to replace the old small chapel of St. John de Britto, which had been demolished. The new Shrine has become a center for prayer and worship, attracting crowds from both near and far every Saturday evening for Mass and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
