History

In the early days of the new Madurai Mission, the early Jesuits - Frs. Canoz, Puccinelli, and Sortorio - served the Christians of Kamuthi, some of whom trace their origins back to Xavierian roots. Initially, Kamuthi functioned as a sub-station under Rajakembiram, then Madurai under Fr. Trincal, then Ramnad, and finally Thiruvarangam. It wasn't until 1968 that it gained parish status.

Every year on June 13, the community celebrates their patron's feast in grand style. The present church, characterized by high walls and a three-nave layout, follows the Gothic style. It was likely constructed at the beginning of the century. Msgr. J.P. Leonard describes it as having a divine aura, especially when viewed from the elevated fort area.
