History
St. John de Britto endured imprisonment and torture at Kalayarkoil from 13th to 28th July 1685 before his martyrdom in Oriyur in 1693. Similarly, Fr. Peter Martin faced a two-month imprisonment here in 1711 before being exiled from Marava. This site of persecution now houses the Church of St. John de Britto and a school complex established in 1975.
To commemorate the third centenary of St. John de Britto's martyrdom, a new parish was established on 16th June 1993. This parish comprises twelve substations from Susaiapparpattanam and seven from Andichioorani.
