 History

             The Idaikattur parish was established by Fr. Hurlin, S.J. in 1865. Over time, it became the foundation for several present-day parishes including Michaelpattanam, Rajakembiram, Savariarpattanam, Manamadurai, and Sivagangai. The impressive church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was constructed here by Fr. Ferdinand Celle S.J., with generous assistance from an Anglican convert, Lady Mary Anne, between 1884 and 1894. One notable event that has drawn thousands of visitors from all around is the annual passion play, which has been running since 1877 and was highlighted during its centenary celebration in June 1993. Additionally, the First Friday devotions now also attract large crowds to the shrine every month.
