History
The land upon which the parish church and other structures now stand was initially purchased by Fr. Laporte and subsequently reclaimed by Fr. Samuvel Dorairaj from those who had taken possession of it. It is likely that St. John de Britto traversed this area and converted several families to the Catholic faith, as indicated by the old shrine of Alangara Matha.
This parish was officially established on 1st March 1963, with Fr. Thamburaj serving as its inaugural parish priest. Prior to this, it was a part of the Thiruvarangam parish. The parish attained the status of a vicariate center on 16th May 1988, with Fr. V. Michael assuming the role of the first Vicar Forane. Fr. Michael, who had previously served as parish priest from 1970 to 1980, oversaw the completion of the present church on 15th August 1978.
The original presbytery, constructed between 1865 and 1868, was demolished to make way for a new one that caters to the needs of both the parish and the vicariate.
